Fall in the Dominican

Here we are.  Experiencing our first autumn in our new home.  It’s hard to think about fall without apple cider and pumpkin carvings and laughter with extended family.

We’ve exchanged the rich hues of autumn leaves for miles of sugar cane. We’ve replaced cooler temperatures for muggy weather and power outages. We’ve traded time with friends for conversations with neighbors who don’t always understand our American way of life.

While there is nothing quite as exciting and satisfying as living where God has called us, we still miss the people and relationships (and even the changing of the seasons) that we’ve left behind.  But one thing that has eased this transition for us has been the kids.

The precious kids.  We have loved getting to know the little boys and girls in our pre-school along with their families who live in the four bateyes we are currently working in.

Case in point – Reina Belle.  When Ang first met her, Reina Belle could only be described as “feisty” and “strong-willed”.  She was openly defiant when asked to do something.  After some tough love and a few times in the Silla de Desobediencia (time-out chair), there has already been an amazing change in her attitude.  Every morning, she climbs up on the truck with a big, ornery smile to find “her” seat near the truck cab where the wind whips around in her face.  When Angela or Katie kneel down to talk to her, she generously lavishes them with kisses or tickles. She raises her hand often to be called on as the ayudante in class. Reina Belle loves to have help writing her name at the top of papers.  She does not want us to write her name for her – instead she makes Ang wrap a big hand around her little one, guiding her pencil as they say each letter together. While she is still the “feisty” Reina Belle, we have come to love the “smart” and “fun-loving” and “teachable” parts of Reina Belle too!

Then there is adorable Yohan.  This three-year-old’s squishy, dimpled smile is completely contagious. His laughter can be heard across the truck as we travel to Lima for fun-filled days of learning – sounds that are far cries from his first week of school. At the beginning of the year, Josh spent a good deal of time outside the classroom with Yohan as he struggled to “learn the ropes” of Toni’s class. Now he is mastering his reds and blues and 123’s, all from some teachers who understand the life-change a quality education can bring. Even more importantly, he’s already learning about the God who created his beautiful little smile and infectious laugh. It is exciting to think about the opportunities Yohan could have after twelve (plus) years in our school.

Chiquito is another new four-year-old who is still getting used to the classroom setting.  While he is slowly coming out of his shell, he doesn’t smile often or raise his hand to be called on.  One day when Angela asked for an ayudante, she decided to look past the sea of waving hands and picked Chiquito to be her helper.  There are no words to describe the joy that filled Chiquito’s countenance as he realized it was “his turn”.  A giant, sheepish smile enveloped his entire face as he slowly walked to the front of the room.  (Ironically, he missed the answer to the question because he was so excited to be the ayudante.)  Now, he yearns for his teachers’ approval on his worksheets as he practices his letters and numbers. What a difference a bit of love and recognition brings into the life of a boy like Chiquito!

There are more stories, more kids, and more families.  And here we are on this tiny tropical island, overlapping a bit of our lives with theirs.

It is absolutely breathtaking to watch the seasons slowly change from one to another, and we miss seeing those transformations take place.  But we are relishing in the fact that God is gently changing little lives from the inside-out. We love seeing these miracles in action!

P.S.  The three children above (as well as several others) are not yet sponsored financially.  With a $50 monthly gift, the lives of these boys and girls can continue to be changed!

Packing Up and Moving Out

It’s official!  The plane tickets have been purchased.  Our belongings are slowly being sorted and packed away.  We are on our way to making the Dominican Republic our new home!  Thank God we have reached the point in our support raising where moving is a reality.  Come the afternoon of Monday, May 21, the four of us will be on Dominican soil for good.  While we’re not nearly 100% funded, we’ve never gone without our needs being met.  We trust that God will bring in the rest of our support over the next few months.

People are asking us how we are feeling.  There is no easy answer to that.  We’re excited about this “next chapter”.  We’re heartbroken to be leaving family and friends.  We’re relieved with each task we complete.  We’re nervous about adjusting to a new culture and way of living.  We’re eager to really build some relationships with people.  We’re dreading the exhaustion of the move with two little dudes.  We’re anxious about learning Spanish.  But we’re content in knowing that we are loved and cared for by One who is our source of strength and peace and joy.  Above all, we’re hopeful that Christ will use us as He wants.

With that said, we’re packing up and moving out!  Onward…

1000 Miles (And 3 Supporters) Closer

What a weekend.  We’re home again after a long trip to Virginia. Over the last 4 days, we drove about 22 hours and racked up 1000 miles.  Thankfully that just means we’re 1000 miles closer to moving to the DR.

Noah and Leyton had fun hanging out with some families who are currently supporting us and who were gracious enough to host us.

Want to hear another reason we’re closer to making The Big Move?  We gained several new supporters over the weekend!  It is unbelievable how God continues to bring us the people and funds we need to continue on this journey.  None of this is by accident.  And none of this is from our efforts.  Again and again, God has shown us that His timing and His will are perfect.  This experience hasn’t always been easy or pleasant.  But we want for nothing.  And we praise Him for everything.

Next step – buying those one-way plane tickets!  Still praying for a May leave date.

The Nitty Gritty Details

Last week was a busy one for us – we spent most of the week in Ohio.  A friend from college contacted us about presenting the ministry at his two churches.  That email alone was encouraging.  We haven’t had much success “cold” contacting churches because most places already have their missionaries and ministries set up that they give to.  Meeting the sweet people in these two congregations was a big blessing, and we had a great time sharing our hearts and catching up with college friends.

Afterwards, we drove on down to Columbus and stayed with Ang’s parents.  There we spent a good portion of two days in state buildings getting official copies of our marriage license and Angela’s birth certificate.  Then we visited other state buildings to get our certificates stamped a second time, proving that the first official stamp was actually… official.  (Confused yet?)  Although it was a bit frustrating to spend that much time and money (over $50 for a couple of official stamps), it felt good to check another task off the “to do” list.  Now we’re waiting on Leyton’s passport and Noah’s “officialized” birth certificate from Virginia to come in the mail.

While we were in Columbus, we also made the plans to sell our little green car that we’ve had for the first three years of our marriage.  A couple months back, the transmission finally decided to die on us, so we’re borrowing my parents’ car until we move to DR.

Saying goodbye to the Mazda

Noah decided to get his first ever flu bug during the week, so he spent some extra time with his thumb and blankie the last few days.  He was quite the trooper though, and he still found time to terrorize Grandpa’s kitty cats and go for a wagon ride.  We’re thankful he’s been a pretty healthy dude over the past 18 months.

Well, those are the nitty gritty details of last week.  Praying for more monthly supporters this week.  Can’t wait to make The Big Move!

Around Freedom in 60 Seconds – November Video

While in the Dominican for three weeks in July, we met Wander and Francis, two young men from the sugarcane village of Lima.  Since returning to the States, we’ve learned that Francis has accepted Christ and has grown in his faith!  Now, Wander, Francis and Yuleisy are working hard teaching and building relationships with even more kids as our team is now involved in a third village called Cabeza de Toro.

Update – The “Scott” Version

Hey everybody,

There are some exciting things happening and so I just wanted to jot a few of them down.  This could potentially be considered “information overload” – if you get our newsletter there might be a little overlap, but hopefully you will be able to handle it.  So without further ado… the update.

Things are going well for us in Indiana.  Since returning from the Dominican, we’ve had seven new people join our sending team which has been really cool and encouraging.  We’ve been traveling alot too, meeting with new people and catching up with others.  We also found out that we’re going to be having another boy in February (by the way, for those of you who didn’t know, Ang is pregnant)!  We’re excited about being a family of four in the Dominican.  At 13 months, Noah is close to walking (he took a couple of steps yesterday), but I think he’s too lazy or stubborn to do it on his own just yet.  He wants to hold our hands and make our lower backs sore while we trot him around everywhere.  🙂

On the other side (the Dominican that is), there are also amazing things going on.  We have completed the 10-week “VBS” that we did in two villages over the summer.  It was neat to hear about the kids who came to Christ, as well as the three Dominican young people that traveled with our team from village to village that we believe will actually start their own “VBS” in a different village in the late fall.  It was an awesome opportunity to begin the discipleship process with them and the future looks exciting.  Finally, Freedom International has been looking for land in the Dominican over the past few months and we found a 15-acre plot of land available!  From what I understand, it even has a bunch of lemon and mango trees which we will be able to use right away for the people in the village.  Feel free to check it out.  The Hilgemans leave the DR today for the States, and we’re going to be having a banquet on October 11th to begin raising the funds for this land. If you could be in prayer over the next week about the banquet, that would be awesome.

Anyway, I hope I didn’t lose you in all of that.  We hope that you are doing well and that you’re able to enjoy the fall weather.  That’s it for now.  Catch you later!

Scott, Ang, Noah, and Unnamed Male Baby Mitchener-

Movin’ on up!

So excited about what God has been doing the past few days.  We’ve gained two monthly supporters and moved from 35% to 37% funded!  Several others have been talking with us recently about their role and investment in our ministry as well.

If we reach our 50% goal by December, a couple who is currently supporting us will double their support, giving us an additional 2%.  We could be looking at being 52% supported by the holiday season!  To reach that point, we need 13 more $50/month supporters.  If you’re interested, you can become part of our sending team by giving now!

No matter what happens, still trusting God through this process.  Thanks for the thoughts and prayers that we know are coming our way!

T-Minus 2.5 weeks!

It’s hard to believe we only have about 2 1/2 weeks left in VA.  That’s right, we’re getting ready to make the move back to the Indiana area to work on raising support there.  Ang is working on packing during the days while I finish out my last two weeks of work at Liberty.

Right now, we are at 28% of our monthly budget.  We would LOVE to leave Virginia at an even 30%.  That means we need 4 more partners at $25/month or 2 partners at $50/month. Pray with us as we finish up our last few days of meeting with people and churches and as we get everything loaded up and ready to make the 9-hour trek to Anderson.

We’re excited about this new step but definitely sad to leave all of the friends we’ve made here in Virginia.  This is where we started our family and our lives together, so it’s definitely going to be a change after being here for three years.  We’re trusting that God’s plan is perfect and we’re looking forward to what’s in store.

Here’s the Noah-man looking ready to make the big move.

March 2011 in Pictures

Earlier this month, we took a vacation to Gatlinburg, TN with Scott’s parents.  It was so relaxing to put aside the stresses of work and support-raising for a week and enjoy spending time with family!

Noah had fun looking at all the fish and penguins at Ripley’s Aquarium!

The Noah-man loves getting into everything now.  He just started sitting up and crawling a little, too.  Time to “babyproof” the apartment!

Noah with our newest supporter!  He must be happy because he’s one step closer to moving to the Dominican Republic.  🙂
